3 reasons why Lamine Yamal is better than Messi at 17

At just 17, Lamine Yamal has emerged as one of the brightest young talents in football.

While comparisons to Lionel Messi are often seen as premature, some argue that Yamal’s achievements and playing style at this age surpass what Messi accomplished during his teenage years.

Here’s a breakdown of why the young Spaniard is being hailed as a prodigy who could outshine the Argentine legend.

1. International Impact

Lamine Yamal has already made history on the international stage. At 16, he became the youngest player to debut and score for Spain, also playing a significant role in their UEFA Euro 2024 triumph.

In contrast, Messi’s international career with Argentina was slower to gain momentum. Messi’s debut for the senior national team in 2005 ended with a red card, and he didn’t fully establish himself as a key player until the 2006 World Cup.

Yamal’s immediate influence on Spain’s success sets him apart from Messi’s gradual international rise.

2. Versatility and Tactical Awareness

While Messi’s dribbling and goal-scoring prowess were evident from a young age, Yamal’s versatility across multiple attacking positions has impressed analysts.

He can seamlessly operate as a winger, playmaker, or forward, adapting to different tactical systems. His football IQ and decision-making at such a young age are considered more advanced than Messi’s when he was 17.

This adaptability allows Yamal to thrive in various systems, making him a valuable asset for both his club and national team.

3. Exposure to Top-Level Football

Yamal’s development has benefited from modern football’s emphasis on youth integration. Playing for Barcelona’s senior team in La Liga and competing in the UEFA Champions League at such an early stage has given him experience against elite competition.

In contrast, Messi’s rise through the ranks was more gradual, with limited first-team opportunities until his breakout season in 2005-06.

Yamal’s exposure to high-pressure environments and top-tier opposition has accelerated his growth in ways Messi didn’t experience at the same age.
