3 reasons why Victor Osimhen could struggle at Galatasaray next season

Victor Osimhen’s permanent switch to Galatasaray has made headlines across Europe.

The Nigerian striker, who lit up the Turkish Süper Lig last season during a sensational loan spell, completed a record-breaking €75 million transfer from Napoli, making him the most expensive signing in Turkish football history.

While expectations are sky-high following his blistering form (37 goals and 8 assists in 41 appearances), the 2025/26 season may not be as smooth for Osimhen.

Here are three key reasons why the Super Eagles star could struggle in the coming campaign:

1. The Weight of a Record Transfer Fee

Galatasaray have gone all in on Osimhen. The club did not only break their transfer record, they shattered the Turkish league’s ceiling. With such a hefty price tag comes enormous pressure. Every miss, injury, or drop in form will be magnified. Fans and media alike will expect instant returns.

This pressure is compounded by financial limitations. The massive outlay on Osimhen and his reported €15 million-per-year salary could restrict the club’s ability to strengthen other crucial areas of the squad.

If Galatasaray fail to bolster the midfield or defensive line, Osimhen could find himself isolated, overworked, or starved of service.

2. Physical Load and Injury History

Osimhen’s game is built on power, pace, and aggression. He thrives on high-intensity sprints, pressing defenders, and relentless runs into the box. But that style comes at a cost.

Although he stayed largely fit last season, Osimhen has had a history of muscular injuries, facial fractures, and hamstring problems dating back to his Serie A days.

With Galatasaray expected to compete on multiple fronts – domestically, in Europe, and possibly with Nigeria’s national team – the sheer volume of games could stretch him thin.

Without proper rotation or rest, the 26-year-old could be vulnerable to burnout or injury relapse, especially in a league known for its physicality.

3. Tactical Adjustments and Defensive Targeting

Last season, Osimhen caught many Turkish defenders off guard. This time, they’ll be ready. Opposing coaches will have studied his movement, timing, and physical presence. Expect deeper defensive lines, double teams, and more aggressive tactics to contain him.

Moreover, Galatasaray must evolve tactically. Osimhen benefitted from quality service last season, but with changes expected in the team’s midfield and wing positions, there’s uncertainty about the creative supply around him.

If he’s forced to drop deeper or drift wide to get involved, his natural scoring instincts may be diluted.
