Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has explained the absence of star striker Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman from the Super Eagles’ upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
Speaking to the media after the Jamaica Unity Cup final match, Chelle said: “We will miss two players (Vs Poland and Portugal). Victor Osimhen had (has) to change his club, so I prefer he stays in the South. And Lookman is very tired and Atletico asked us to let him.”
The comments immediately sparked widespread speculation about Osimhen’s future at Galatasaray, with many interpreting them as confirmation that the striker is negotiating a summer transfer.
Osimhen quickly addressed the issue directly. In a statement, he revealed he had spoken with Coach Chelle by phone and clarified that the remarks were taken out of context and blown out of proportion:
The friendly matches are scheduled for Poland vs Nigeria on June 3, 2026, in Warsaw, and Nigeria vs Portugal on June 10 in Portugal.
Osimhen’s unavailability for these games has generated debate among Nigerian fans and pundits about squad preparation, player management, and the balance between club and country commitments.
3 Reasons Why Victor Osimhen Should Not Miss the Poland and Portugal Matches
1. Maintaining Momentum and Form Ahead of Bigger Campaigns
Osimhen is coming off a highly productive season at Galatasaray with 22 goals in 33 appearances. Friendly matches against strong European sides like Poland and Portugal offer the perfect platform to maintain his sharpness, build chemistry with teammates, and enter the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in peak rhythm.
Missing these games risks a dip in match fitness and confidence, especially for a player whose presence alone elevates the Super Eagles’ attacking threat.
2. Leadership and Squad Unity
As Nigeria’s talisman and one of the most experienced players, Osimhen’s participation sends a strong message of commitment to the national team project under Chelle.
His absence, even for legitimate club-related reasons, can inadvertently create a narrative of divided loyalties or special treatment. Being on the pitch or even in camp instills leadership, motivates younger players, and strengthens team morale
3. Tactical and Competitive Value Against Quality Opposition
Poland and Portugal feature top-level defenders and intense atmospheres. Facing them would give Osimhen valuable experience against varied defensive styles, helping Chelle fine-tune tactics and identify areas for improvement.
Osimhen’s finishing, hold-up play, and aerial ability are unmatched in the Nigerian squad; his inclusion maximizes the team’s chances of positive results in these friendlies, which serve as important preparation benchmarks rather than low-stakes games.
