3 Things To Know About Femi Azeez After His Dream Nigeria Debut

Tosin by Tosin

The spotlight belonged to the Nigeria national football team on the night of the Unity Cup clash against Zimbabwe national football team, but by the final whistle, one name had completely taken over conversations among Nigerian football fans;  Femi Azeez.

Before kickoff, supporters barely knew him. He was not one of the regular Super Eagles stars dominating headlines across Europe. He was not playing for a Champions League giant or arriving with massive international hype. Yet within 90 minutes, the London-born winger announced himself in spectacular fashion.

He scored two  goals on his debut. And a performance that immediately made Nigerians ask one question: “Where has this guy been?”

The winger became the first Nigerian player in over five decades to score a brace on his senior international debut, turning himself from an unknown name into one of the most talked-about players around the Super Eagles setup.

From non-league football in England to scoring twice for Nigeria on his first appearance, Azeez’s rise is one of resilience, patience, and persistence. Here are three important things to know about Nigeria’s newest attacking sensation.

1. Femi Azeez Was Once Rejected And Played In England’s Eighth Tier

One of the most remarkable parts of Azeez’s story is how close his football dream came to ending before it truly started.

Born in Westminster, London, to a Nigerian father and Spanish mother, Azeez was released by Watford’s academy at the age of 14 after being considered not good enough. For many young players, that kind of rejection becomes the end of the road.

Instead, it became the beginning of his fight.

After leaving Watford, he dropped into non-league football with Northwood, a club competing in the eighth tier of English football. There were no glamorous stadiums, huge crowds, or major television attention. It was rough football played on difficult pitches against experienced and physical opponents.

At just 16 years old, he broke into Northwood’s first team, showing the kind of mentality many professional clubs look for in young players. The difficult route taught him how to handle pressure, physical battles, and setbacks long before reaching elite football.

His journey later took him through Wealdstone F.C. and loan spells before eventually earning a move to Reading F.C., where his career finally began to accelerate again.

2. He Is A Versatile Left-Footed Attacker

Standing around 5 foot 11 inches tall, Azeez fits the profile of the modern attacking winger. He is quick, athletic, technically sharp, and extremely direct with the ball at his feet.

Naturally left-footed, he prefers operating from the right wing where he can cut inside onto his stronger foot, a style that immediately reminds many fans of players like Bukayo Saka and Samuel Chukwueze.

What stood out most during his debut against Zimbabwe was his confidence. Every time he received possession, his instinct was to attack defenders immediately rather than play safe passes.

That fearless approach is something Nigerian supporters always appreciate.

Azeez is also tactically flexible. He can play on either wing, operate as a second striker, or drift into central attacking areas when needed. That versatility could become extremely valuable for Nigeria national football team coach Eric Chelle, especially during major tournaments where injuries and tactical changes often force managers to adjust systems quickly.

His development over the years has also been impressive statistically.

During his breakthrough period at Reading F.C., he became one of the club’s brightest attacking players despite the team’s financial and competitive struggles. He later earned a move to Millwall F.C., where he continued improving in the physically demanding English Championship.

The consistency of his growth is one reason Nigeria moved quickly to secure his international future before countries like England or Spain seriously entered the picture.

3. His Super Eagles Debut Instantly Made History

Nigeria has seen many memorable international debuts over the years, but very few compare to what Azeez achieved against Zimbabwe.

He scored his first goal just minutes into the game, immediately calming nerves and announcing himself to the supporters. Then came a second goal later in the match to complete a stunning introduction to international football.

The performance placed him in a rare category of Nigerian players who scored a brace on their senior debut for the national team.

Only a handful of players in Nigerian football history have managed that feat.

For many fans, it was not just about the goals. It was the confidence, movement, aggression, and maturity he displayed throughout the match. He looked comfortable immediately, as though he had already spent years inside the Super Eagles setup.

That mentality matters at international level.

Wearing the green and white shirt comes with enormous pressure, especially for foreign-born players trying to win over supporters quickly. But Nigerian fans usually embrace players who perform without fear, and Azeez did exactly that.

His performance also represents a bigger shift in Nigerian football recruitment. In previous years, Nigeria often waited too long before approaching dual-nationality talents, eventually losing players like Bukayo Saka, Tammy Abraham, and Fikayo Tomori to other national teams.

With Azeez, the scouting moved earlier and more decisively.

Now, after one unforgettable debut, Nigeria may have discovered another dangerous attacking weapon for the future.
