Nigeria’s Flying Eagles were defeated 0-1 by Burkina Faso in their opening Group B match at the 2024 WAFU B U20 AFCON in Lome, Togo.
After a demanding one-week campout at the Remo Stars Training Complex in Ikenne, Ogun State, the Flying Eagles arrived in Lome as favorites.
The loss means it will now be difficult for the defending champions to advance to the knockout stages.
Burkina Faso 1-0 Nigeria
The Flying Eagles were held in check in the first half without a goal as Burkina Faso enjoyed the better scoring possibilities.
After several attempts at goal, Burkina Faso was rewarded with a goal in the 56th minute after breaching the Nigerian defense.
Burkina Faso managed to hold on for the victory against the Flying Eagles and earn three points.
Only two teams will move on to the semi-finals from each group.
Burkina Faso will play Cote d’Ivoire in their second Group B match on Monday, while the Flying Eagles need to regroup and focus on their crucial meeting against the Ivorians on Thursday.
The competition taking place in Togo is a qualifying event for the 2020 Africa U20 Cup of Nations scheduled for next year.
