Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe was caught offside a career-high eight times in Saturday’s Clasico, matching the highest total for any player in a LaLiga game in the last 15 years.
Barcelona won the game 4-0 thanks to a brace from Robert Lewandowski, who took his tally for the season to 14 league goals.
Lamine Yamal and Raphinha sealed the win late on, sending Barca six points clear of Madrid at the top.
Mbappé’s frustration was palpable, with three shots on target but two disallowed goals due to offside. He’s scored eight times since joining Madrid, but this was his biggest test yet.
The star forward tied the unwanted record for most offsides in a LaLiga game since 2009, matching Elche’s Jonathas’ record against Athletic Club in May 2015.
Barca players hail Flick for defensive masterclass
Speaking after the game, Barca’s players praised Hansi Flick for his tactical nous.
“We’ve been doing it all season, the defensive work is spectacular,” midfielder Marc Casado said
“It’s the work of the whole team. It’s amazing to be that brave, to play a defensive line that high, but it’s working for us at the moment.”
