Title holders, Liverpool suffered a narrow defeat to Tottenham in the first leg of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.
Lucas Bergvall’s 86th minute strike made the difference on the night as the home side secured a 1-0 victory.
The highlight of the match was Rodrigo Bentancur’s awkward landing which saw the Uruguayan stretched off the pitch after a lengthy delay.
Unlike the previous meeting of both sides in the league in December, the first leg of the semi-finals had just a goal.
Dominic Solanke thought he had given Tottenham the lead against his former team but with VAR introduced in the semis, his goal was chucked off.
However, Dominic Solanke ensured he contributed to the only goal of the game moments later.
The striker chased a long pass into Liverpool’s box, bullied Konate off the ball and layed a pass to Bergvall who placed the ball beyond Allison’s reach.
Antonin Kinksy made a remarkable save in added time to deny substitute Darwin Nunez from equalising for Liverpool.
The Uruguayan was quickest to react to pass into the box and took a one-time shot towards the bottom-left corner but Kinksy reacted quickly as well.
The Reds had seven shots on target in the defeat as they struggled to convert their chances.
Arne slot’s men will look to overturn Tottenham’s slim advantage when both sides meet for the second leg at Anfield in the first week of February.
