Meet 3 newcomers invited to Super Eagles squad by Eric Chelle

Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has announced his final 23-man squad for Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

The team will face Rwanda in Kigali on March 21, followed by a home fixture against Zimbabwe in Uyo on March 25.

Among the notable inclusions are three players earning their first call-ups to the national team.

1. Igoh Ogbu (Defender)

Igoh Ogbu is a towering centre-back who plays for Slavia Prague in the Czech First League. The 25-year-old has been a consistent performer for the club, earning his first international call-up to the Super Eagles due to his strong presence in defense.

Known for his aerial ability, physicality, and calmness under pressure, Ogbu has the potential to bolster Nigeria’s defensive options. He joined Slavia Prague after impressing in Norway with Tromsø, and his growth in the Czech league has helped him earn recognition at the international level.

His impressive performances in Europe are expected to make him a valuable asset for Nigeria, especially as they look to tighten their backline during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

 

2. Tolu Arokodare (Forward)

Tolu Arokodare is a promising forward known for his imposing physical presence and clinical goal-scoring ability. Standing at 6’6″, the 24-year-old striker currently plays for KRC Genk in the Belgian Pro League, where he has been a standout performer.

Arokodare is a traditional target man, with the ability to hold up the ball, win aerial duels, and finish with precision. His excellent goal-scoring form in Belgium, where he has been one of the top scorers in the league, caught the attention of Super Eagles coach Éric Chelle, leading to his first call-up.

Arokodare’s height and power make him a significant threat in the air and in the box, and his addition provides Nigeria with a potent forward option in their bid for World Cup qualification.

3. Papa Daniel Mustapha (Midfielder)

Papa Daniel Mustapha is an energetic and versatile midfielder who plays for Niger Tornadoes in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).

The 26-year-old has impressed with his all-around midfield game, displaying a blend of work rate, vision, and defensive stability. Mustapha is known for his ability to break up opposition attacks while also contributing creatively to his team’s offensive play.

His performances in the NPFL have caught the eye of Super Eagles’ scouts, and his call-up to the national team marks a significant step in his career.

Although relatively unknown internationally, Mustapha’s determination and talent make him an exciting prospect for Nigeria, providing much-needed depth in the midfield as the Super Eagles pursue their World Cup qualification aspirations.
