3 reasons why Manchester City might miss out on Champions League qualification

As the 2024/2025 football season nears its conclusion, Manchester City, once a perennial fixture in UEFA’s elite competition faces an unprecedented threat to its Champions League status.

While it may seem unthinkable given the club’s domestic dominance in recent years, a confluence of challenges could see the reigning English champions watching Europe’s premier competition from the sidelines next season.

Here are three key reasons why Manchester City might fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League:

1. Increased Competition in the Premier League

The 2024/2025 Premier League season has seen a remarkable resurgence from traditional rivals and rising contenders alike.

Arsenal and Liverpool have maintained consistent form, while Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa have mounted serious top-four challenges.

With Newcastle United and Manchester United also vying for European places, City faces fiercer competition than in previous years.

A few poor results in the run-in could push them out of the top-four or top-five positions required for Champions League qualification.

2. Squad Fatigue and Tactical Stagnation

After years of relentless success under Pep Guardiola, signs of wear and tear are beginning to show.

Several key players, including Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva, have battled injuries, while others appear fatigued after successive seasons of high-intensity football. Guardiola’s tactical approach, once revolutionary, has begun to look predictable against more adaptable managers.

This stagnation has translated into inconsistent performances, dropped points against mid-table sides, and an apparent vulnerability in big matches.

3. Lack of Squad Depth in Key Positions

Despite City’s deep roster, injuries to key players have revealed fragility in certain positions, especially in defense and central midfield.

The departure of Ilkay Gündogan and injuries to Kevin De Bruyne have left gaps that younger players like Mateo Kovacic and Rico Lewis haven’t consistently filled. With few reliable alternatives, Guardiola has sometimes been forced to field weakened XIs in crucial matches.
