Aston Villa have confirmed they will not be triggering the £40 million option to sign Marcus Rashford on a permanent deal.
The Manchester United forward had joined Villa on loan in February and will now return to Old Trafford ahead of the 2025/26 season.
During his short spell at Villa Park, Rashford made 17 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing six assists. His standout performance came in the FA Cup quarter-finals where he scored twice against Preston North End.
Despite his contributions, Villa have decided against exercising the buy clause agreed at the start of the loan deal. The club thanked Rashford, alongside other departing loanees Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi, for their professionalism and efforts during their time at the club.
With his return to Manchester United now official, Rashford’s future remains uncertain. The £40m valuation set by United is still valid, and the club is open to offers.

Barcelona have reportedly shown interest in a potential loan move, although their financial constraints could make a permanent transfer unlikely. A loan deal, possibly with shared wages, is being considered by the Catalan giants.
Other European clubs such as AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Borussia Dortmund have also been loosely linked, but no formal approaches have been made.
United are said to be willing to part ways with Rashford this summer if their valuation is met, especially after a disappointing 2024/25 season in which the forward’s form fluctuated. As the transfer window heats up, Rashford will be one of the more high-profile names to watch.
