Rasheedat Ajibade has been crowned Player of the Tournament at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), capping off a remarkable individual campaign that helped the Super Falcons lift a historic 10th continental title.
Ajibade, who captained the team throughout the tournament in Morocco, was a driving force behind Nigeria’s unbeaten run. Her performances earned her three Woman of the Match awards, underlining her influence and consistency in midfield and attack.
She played a key role in Nigeria’s crucial knockout victories over Zambia and South Africa, scoring a composed penalty and providing a key assist in the semis.
Despite a modest goal tally of one, Ajibade’s leadership, creativity, and control of the midfield earned her praise across the continent. After her third match award, she humbly told reporters, “I don’t deserve it… but God’s grace found me,” dedicating her awards to her teammates.
In the final, Nigeria came from behind to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling contest, with Ajibade once again central to the team’s tactical structure and composure under pressure.
Her teammate Chiamaka Nnadozie was named Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament, while Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak claimed the Golden Boot with five goals. South Africa received the Fair Play Award.
