Luka Dončić has signed a three-year, $165 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, solidifying his status as the franchise’s cornerstone through the 2027–28 NBA season.
The deal, which includes a player option for the final year, allows Dončić to potentially hit free agency again in 2028 when he would qualify for a five-year, $417 million contract, making it one of the richest in league history if salary cap projections hold.
The Slovenian superstar, who was acquired by the Lakers in a blockbuster trade with the Dallas Mavericks earlier this year, quickly became the team’s focal point.
In 28 games with the Lakers last season, he averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists, leading the team to the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. His on-court brilliance and all-around impact earned praise from teammates, fans, and the front office alike.
Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka described the extension as a “transformational moment for the franchise,” emphasizing Dončić’s leadership and long-term importance.
Dončić reportedly opted for a shorter deal to maintain flexibility and capitalize on future increases in the salary cap. This strategic decision mirrors moves made by other elite players in recent years who seek both financial leverage and control over their careers.
At 26, the five-time All-Star and All-NBA First Team member is already considered one of the most gifted players of his generation.
Alongside the announcement, Dončić pledged a $5 million donation toward youth sports initiatives, continuing his tradition of using his platform for global impact.
