Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has publicly praised defender William Troost-Ekong, highlighting his crucial leadership both on and off the pitch despite the captain’s recent rotational role in the national team.
Troost-Ekong, whose minutes had been reduced due to what was described as poor form, faced a turbulent period earlier in the qualifying campaign.
The centre-back was an unused substitute against Rwanda in September and was taken off at half-time against South Africa after scoring an own goal.

However, he made a strong return against Lesotho in Polokwane, scoring a crucial penalty, though he was benched for the final decider against Benin Republic.
Osimhen took to social media to acknowledge his teammate, singling out the captain for special recognition amid the criticism he has faced:
“An amazing leader on and off the pitch. You’ve always been there for each and every one of your teammates. Thank you, skippo,” Osimhen wrote in an Instagram story dedicated to Troost-Ekong.
Osimhen’s message reaffirms the strong unity within the squad, emphasizing the captain’s importance regardless of his selection status.
