3 things we learned from tonight’s Europa Conference League action

The UEFA Europa Conference League delivered another night of drama, surprises, and statement performances across Europe.

From shock defeats to dominant displays, here are three key takeaways from this evening’s fixtures.

1. No easy games in Europe — Palace pay the price for complacency

Crystal Palace’s home defeat to AEK Larnaca was a reminder that reputation counts for little on European nights. Despite dominating possession and creating more chances, the Premier League side were undone 1–0 by a well-organised Cypriot outfit thanks to a clinical strike from Riad Bajic.

Oliver Glasner’s men looked short of ideas in the final third and paid dearly for defensive lapses. For a club adjusting to continental competition, it was a harsh lesson that every opponent in Europe is capable of punishing a moment’s carelessness.

2. Squad rotation can be a winning strategy

Mainz 05 boss, Bo Henriksen made nine changes to his starting XI, but it didn’t stop his side from earning a hard-fought 1–0 win over Zrinjski Mostar. Young forward Nelson Weiper was the difference-maker, scoring the decisive goal to continue Mainz’s impressive European form.

The German side’s ability to perform despite heavy rotation highlights the value of squad depth and tactical trust. Henriksen’s approach paid off perfectly, keeping key players fresh for the Bundesliga while still collecting vital points in Europe.

3. AEK Athens make a statement, Aberdeen humbled

While some sides scraped narrow wins, AEK Athens sent shockwaves across the competition with a 6–0 demolition of Aberdeen. The Greek champions were relentless from start to finish, combining fluid attacking play with ruthless finishing.

For Aberdeen, the result was a nightmare — a sign that defensive discipline and mental resilience are non-negotiable at this level. For AEK, it was the kind of performance that turns contenders into favourites.
