Brentford cruise, Cardiff edge Derby, Fulham survive shoot-out on EFL Cup night

In the round of sixteen of the EFL Cup Fourth Round, three ties unfolded with drama, dominance and one goalless draw settled only by penalties.

At Blundell Park, Grimsby Town’s unlikely cup run came to a halt as Brentford imposed their Premier League quality in a convincing 5-0 victory.

The League Two side began brightly, buoyed by a fervent home crowd, but the tide turned with a brilliant curling effort by Mathias Jensen just before the half-hour mark. Soon after, Keane Lewis-Potter nodded in a second from a Reiss Nelson assist and Nelson himself chipped in the third before half-time.

The visitors added a penalty from Fábio Carvalho early in the second half and Nathan Collins headed the fifth in the closing stages — a thorough performance from Brentford that exposed the gap in class.

Meanwhile at the Racecourse Ground, the Welsh derby between Wrexham and Cardiff City delivered its share of tension and quality. Wrexham struck early through Yousef Salech, but Cardiff regrouped and equalised via Kieffer Moore shortly after half-time.

The decisive blow arrived in the 71st minute when Will Fish volleyed home to clinch a 2-1 win for the Bluebirds, who now advance. Wrexham, while spirited in spells, were undone by a sluggish start and found themselves chasing thereafter.

The third tie at Adams Park between Wycombe Wanderers and Fulham was a roller-coaster. Wycombe stunned the visitors with a goal from Cauley Woodrow in the 4th minute.

Fulham eventually responded through Josh King shortly after the break, and then relied on the shoot-out to seal the deal, winning 5-4 on penalties.

Fulham goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte made three crucial saves in the shoot-out, rescuing his side from what could easily have turned embarrassing.
