3 things learned from Madrid derby as Vinícius Brace Seals Dramatic 3-2 Win to Keep Title Hopes Alive

Vinícius Júnior scored twice in the second half to inspire Real Madrid to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Atlético Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday, a result that keeps the hosts within four points of La Liga leaders Barcelona.

After Ademola Lookman gave Atlético a first-half lead, a flurry of goals from Federico Valverde and Nahuel Molina set the stage for Vinícius to curl home a 72nd-minute winner, though the hosts had to survive a late red card for Valverde to secure the points.

Arbeloa Asserts Authority with Selection Gamble

The pre-match narrative was dominated by manager Alvaro Arbeloa’s decision to bench Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Reports indicated the high-profile summer signing was disciplined for arriving late to a training session earlier in the week. While the decision initially seemed to backfire as Atlético controlled the first half through Lookman’s 33rd-minute opener, the gamble paid off tactically in the second period.

Alexander-Arnold eventually entered as a substitute, providing the crucial diagonal pass for the winning goal.

Vinícius Decisive in End-to-End Second Half

The match shifted dramatically in a ten-minute window following the interval. Vinícius Júnior equalized from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute after David Hancko fouled Brahim Díaz.

Federico Valverde then put Madrid ahead just three minutes later, pouncing on a defensive error by José María Giménez. Atlético responded with a spectacular 30-meter strike from Nahuel Molina to level the match at 2-2, but Vinícius restored the lead for good with a clinical solo effort. The Brazilian’s brace marked his second consecutive multi-goal performance.

Defensive Grit Overcomes Late Red Card

The closing stages were marred by a controversial straight red card for Federico Valverde in the 77th minute. Referee José Luis Munuera Montero dismissed the Uruguayan for a challenge on Alex Baena, a decision heavily contested by the Bernabéu crowd.

Forced to defend their slim lead with ten men, Real Madrid relied on defensive solidarity and the woodwork, as Julián Álvarez struck the post in the final minutes. The victory marks Real Madrid’s fifth consecutive league win and ensures they remain in contention for the title as they head into the international break.
