Europa League: 3 Things Learned from Quarter-Final First Legs

Europa League, Porto s Nottingham Forest

The quarter-final first legs of the UEFA Europa League produced a night of away discipline, controlled performances, and one result that may have already decided a tie.

Aston Villa took a firm step toward the semi-finals with a 3–1 win away at Bologna, while Nottingham Forest held FC Porto to a 1–1 draw in Portugal. In Germany, SC Freiburg delivered the standout result, beating Celta Vigo 3–0.

With the ties now set up for the second leg, three key themes stood out from the night.

English sides show control away from home

Aston Villa’s win in Italy was from their calculated tactics. They did not rush the game. They stayed compact and took their chances when they came. It is the kind of performance that travels well in Europe.

Nottingham Forest approached their game differently but with the same effect. Porto pushed, especially at home, but Forest stayed organised and found a way back into the game. A draw away keeps them in a strong position.

Away results like these often decide knockout ties before the return leg is even played.

Freiburg take full control of their tie

While other matches remain open, Freiburg’s 3–0 win stands apart.

They were direct, rarely troubled. Celta Vigo struggled to cope with the pace and movement, and the three-goal gap now leaves them with a difficult task in the second leg.

At this level, overturning that kind of deficit requires good performance.

Second legs will be about game management

The first legs have created two different situations.

For Villa, Forest, and Freiburg, the job is to manage what they already have. They do not need to chase the game. They need to stay calm and avoid mistakes.

For Bologna and Celta Vigo, there is no choice but to respond. They must attack, take risks, and hope for early goals to shift momentum.
