Cristiano Ronaldo and Al Nassr suffered a major setback in the Saudi Pro League title race after a dramatic stoppage-time own goal forced them to settle for a 1-1 draw against rivals Al Hilal on Tuesday night.
Al Nassr looked on course for a crucial victory that would have moved them closer to securing the league crown before disaster struck deep into injury time.
Goalkeeper Bento, attempting to deal with a long throw into the penalty area, accidentally fumbled the ball into his own net in the eighth minute of added time, handing Al Hilal a dramatic equaliser.
The result delayed Al Nassr’s hopes of clinching the Saudi Pro League title and kept the championship race alive heading into the final stages of the season.
Despite the disappointing draw, Al Nassr still sit top of the table with a five-point advantage, although Al Hilal have a game in hand.
Ronaldo’s side will now turn attention to their final league fixture against Damac FC, where victory could finally deliver the Portuguese forward’s first league title in Saudi Arabia.
Since joining Al Nassr in 2023, Ronaldo has played a major role in increasing the global popularity of the Saudi Pro League.
The move also paved the way for several world stars, including Neymar and Karim Benzema, to join clubs in Saudi Arabia.
However, while Ronaldo has enjoyed personal success and strong performances in front of goal, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star is still waiting to win his first domestic league trophy with Al Nassr.
