Manchester United have handed Michael Carrick a permanent contract as head coach after the former club captain steered the team to a third-place finish in the Premier League and secured Champions League qualification.
The club confirmed the news on Friday, ending months of speculation over Carrick’s future following his impressive interim spell.
“We are delighted to announce Michael Carrick will continue as our head coach, having signed a new contract,” United said in an official statement.
Carrick, 44, stepped into the role on a temporary basis in January after the sacking of Ruben Amorim. What began as a caretaker assignment quickly turned into a successful revival, with the team producing a strong run of results that lifted them into the top three and back into Europe’s premier club competition.
“From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United,” Carrick said after signing the new deal. “Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.”
The former England international added: “Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.
“Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again.”
Carrick’s appointment marks a return to stability at Old Trafford after a turbulent season. His deep knowledge of the club, having spent the majority of his playing career at United, is expected to play a key role as the club looks to rebuild and compete consistently at the highest level.
