Crystal Palace claimed the first European trophy in the club’s history on Wednesday after defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in the UEFA Conference League final in Leipzig.
French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the decisive goal early in the second half, turning home a rebound to hand Palace a historic victory on the European stage.
The triumph also marked a memorable farewell for manager Oliver Glasner, who guided the English side to continental success before his expected departure from the club.
Both teams entered the final chasing history, with Rayo Vallecano also hoping to secure the first major trophy in their history. The Spanish side fought hard throughout the contest but failed to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Palace defence.
Crystal Palace players celebrated wildly at full-time as thousands of supporters inside the stadium witnessed one of the greatest nights in the club’s history.
The victory crowns an impressive European campaign for the London club and secures their place among the latest winners of UEFA’s newest continental competition.
