Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala used her goal celebration to deliver a powerful social message on Friday as Nigeria defeated Senegal 2-1 in an international friendly in Ikenne.
The six-time African Women’s Player of the Year opened the scoring in the 32nd minute from the penalty spot, giving the Super Falcons the lead in their first preparatory match ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
However, it was Oshoala’s celebration that quickly drew attention after the goal.
The veteran striker raised her wrists to reveal two handwritten messages on her wristbands. One read, “Save the Teachers,” while the other carried the inscription, “Bring Back Our Children.”
The messages, which showed concerns about the kidnapped students and teachers, immediately became one of the talking points of the match, with fans praising the forward for using her platform to draw attention to important social issues.
On the pitch, the Super Falcons delivered a strong first-half performance against their West African rivals. After Oshoala’s opener, Toni Payne doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 41st minute to put the hosts firmly in control before halftime.
Senegal improved after the break and managed to pull a goal back, setting up a tense finish. Despite the pressure, Nigeria remained organized defensively and held on to secure a 2-1 victory.
The win provides another positive result for head coach Justin Madugu as he continues to assess his squad and build momentum ahead of next year’s WAFCON tournament.
While Nigeria celebrated victory in Ikenne, Oshoala’s goal and her powerful message ensured that the conversation extended beyond football, reminding many of the influence athletes can have in drawing attention to issues affecting society.
The two teams are expected to meet again in the second leg of the friendly series as preparations for the continental championship continue.
