Portuguese champions Benfica Women have completed the signing of Nigerian forward Janet Akekoromowei on a free transfer, following the expiration of her contract with Nigeria Women Football League side Nasarawa Amazons.
The 18-year-old has signed a deal that will keep her at the Lisbon club until 2028, with Benfica retaining the option to extend the contract by a further two years.
Akekoromowei arrives in Portugal after an outstanding campaign in Nigeria, where she established herself as one of the country’s brightest young talents. The versatile attacker was named the NWFL Most Valuable Player after an impressive spell with Nasarawa Amazons.
A product of the Asisat Oshoala Academy, she also enjoyed success on the international stage, helping Nigeria win the 2025 WAFU B U-20 Girls’ Cup and secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup with the Falconets.
Her move to Benfica comes months after a proposed transfer to Barcelona reportedly fell through because of injury. Having recovered, the youngster has now secured a move to the six-time Portuguese champions as she begins the next chapter of her career in European football.
Akekoromowei becomes the latest Nigerian player to join Benfica Women and will be hoping to continue her rapid development with one of Portugal’s most successful clubs.
