Tunisia have reportedly dismissed head coach Sabri Lamouchi after just one match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the team’s crushing 5-1 defeat to Sweden.
The North African side endured a nightmare start to their World Cup campaign in Monterrey on Monday as Sweden produced a dominant display to secure one of the most emphatic victories of the tournament so far.
Lamouchi, who took charge of Tunisia earlier this year, watched helplessly from the touchline as his side were outclassed by the Scandinavian nation. The defeat extended a worrying run of results for Tunisia, who had already suffered heavy losses to Belgium and Austria in recent international friendlies.
Following the humiliating result, reports indicate that officials from the Tunisian Football Federation acted swiftly, deciding to part ways with the 54-year-old manager less than 24 hours after the opening group-stage fixture.
The decision comes amid growing frustration among supporters, many of whom voiced their anger after Tunisia’s defensive collapse against Sweden. The Eagles of Carthage conceded five goals and looked vulnerable throughout the encounter, raising serious concerns about their ability to compete at the tournament.
Lamouchi leaves after overseeing a mixed spell in charge, with Tunisia recording a win against Haiti, a draw against Canada, but also suffering defeats to Austria, Belgium and Sweden.
With the World Cup group stage still in progress, Tunisia now face a race against time to appoint an interim manager capable of steadying the team and keeping their hopes of progression alive.
The Tunisian Football Federation is yet to officially announce Lamouchi’s replacement, but attention will quickly turn to who can lead the national team through the remainder of their World Cup campaign after one of the most dramatic managerial exits of the tournament so far.
