Few African nations have left a bigger mark on the FIFA World Cup than Nigeria. Since their debut in 1994, the Super Eagles have thrilled fans with fearless attacking football, stunning upsets, and unforgettable moments on the game’s biggest stage.

While Nigeria is still chasing a first World Cup quarter-final appearance, the team has produced several goals that remain etched in football history.

Here are five of the most iconic Super Eagles World Cup goals of all time.

1. Rashidi Yekini vs Bulgaria (1994)

On June 21, 1994, Nigeria announced its arrival at the FIFA World Cup in unforgettable fashion.

Facing Bulgaria in their first-ever World Cup match, the Super Eagles were already impressive when Rashidi Yekini made history in the 21st minute. The prolific striker met a low cross inside the penalty area and calmly guided the ball into the net to score Nigeria’s first World Cup goal.

The goal helped Nigeria secure a famous 3-0 victory and remains the most iconic World Cup moment in the country’s history.

2. Daniel Amokachi vs Greece (1994)

Nigeria’s debut tournament was filled with memorable goals, but Daniel Amokachi’s strike against Greece stands among the finest.

Collecting possession deep in Greek territory, Amokachi surged forward with strength and confidence, gliding past defenders before unleashing a thunderous effort from outside the penalty area.

The goal perfectly reflected the fearless attacking identity of the 1994 Super Eagles. It was powerful, direct, and spectacular; qualities that made Nigeria one of the most exciting teams at the tournament.

For many supporters, it remains one of the greatest individual goals ever scored by a Nigerian at the World Cup.

3. Sunday Oliseh vs Spain (1998)

Few goals in Nigerian football history are remembered as vividly as Sunday Oliseh’s winner against Spain at the 1998 World Cup in France.

In one of the tournament’s classic matches, Nigeria battled back from behind against a star-studded Spanish side. With the score level late in the game, the ball fell to Oliseh outside the penalty area.

The midfielder took one touch before smashing a low, powerful shot into the bottom corner from long range. Spain goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta had no chance.

The strike secured a dramatic 3-2 victory and became one of the defining moments of Nigeria’s World Cup story. More than two decades later, it remains the benchmark for great Nigerian World Cup goals.

4. Emmanuel Amunike vs Italy (1994)

Nigeria came within minutes of reaching the World Cup quarter-finals during their debut tournament, thanks largely to Emmanuel Amunike.

In the Round of 16 clash against Italy, Amunike capitalized on defensive hesitation to put Nigeria ahead and on the brink of a historic upset against the European giants.

Although Italy eventually fought back to win 2-1 after extra time, Amunike’s goal remains one of the most significant in Nigerian football history. It showcased the composure and clinical finishing that made him one of the stars of the country’s golden generation.

5. Ahmed Musa vs Iceland (2018)

Ahmed Musa world cup goal

Ahmed Musa cemented his place in Nigerian football history with several World Cup goals, but his stunning second strike against Iceland in Russia stands out above the rest.

After opening the scoring, Musa produced a moment of brilliance for his second goal. Racing clear of the Icelandic defence, he rounded the goalkeeper with remarkable composure before calmly finishing into the net.

The goal sealed a crucial 2-0 victory and kept Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.

Musa’s brace against Iceland followed another brace against Argentina four years earlier, making him the first Nigerian player to score twice in a World Cup match and the country’s all-time leading World Cup scorer with four goals.
