DR Congo’s Iconic ‘Statue Superfan’ Arrives for Crucial World Cup Clash

DR Congo’s most famous supporter, Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, better known as “Lumumba Vea”  has arrived in Guadalajara ahead of the Leopards’ crucial FIFA World Cup group-stage match against Colombia on Tuesday.

Lumumba Vea became a global sensation during the Africa Cup of Nations after standing motionless throughout matches in tribute to Patrice Lumumba, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s first prime minister. Dressed in the colors of the Congolese flag, he recreates the famous Lumumba statue pose, remaining perfectly still for the entire game regardless of the action unfolding on the pitch.

The superfan’s arrival comes as welcome news for Congolese supporters after he missed DR Congo’s 1-1 draw against Portugal in their World Cup opener. His absence was widely noticed, as he has become one of the most recognizable faces in African football fandom.

Despite not being present in the stands, Lumumba Vea watched from afar as the Leopards earned their first-ever World Cup point and scored their first goal in the tournament’s history. Reports indicated that travel and health-related complications had delayed his arrival, but he is now expected to be in the crowd for the highly anticipated encounter with Colombia.

Since adopting his statue-inspired tribute in 2013, Lumumba Vea has become a symbol of national pride, patriotism, and unwavering support for the Congolese national team. His unique presence has earned admiration from football fans worldwide, turning him into one of the standout personalities of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With DR Congo preparing for a decisive showdown against Colombia, many supporters will be hoping the return of their beloved “Statue Superfan” can inspire the Leopards to another memorable result on the world stage.
