Police have arrested a staff member of the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca on Saturday, as per Yabiladi, over the theft of 10,000 dirhams from rooms occupied by Nigeria’s Super Falcons ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Police opened an investigation after a complaint was filed and took the suspect into custody.
The stolen money was recovered from the suspct which he had converted it from dollars into dirhams. The judicial police in Casablanca’s Anfa district confirmed the recovery in a statement.
Toronto FC Midfielder Esther Okoronkwo first raised the alarm in a post on her Snapchat story revealing that more than $1,000 had gone missing from her room and those of several teammates at the Marriott hotel in Casablanca. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Michelle Alozie, and captain Rasheedat Ajibade were among the players affected.
Okoronkwo also called out the hotel’s response to the incident, saying staff offered no explanation and describing their handling of the matter as “disrespectful.”
Esther was subjected to racial slurs by suspected Moroccan users on social media after the matter went viral on the eve of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The theft occurred on the final day of Nigeria’s training camp in Mohammedia, which began on July 15. It struck just hours before the squad departed for Rabat on Saturday, where they open their Group C campaign.
