Super Eagles debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor scored to help Nigeria come from behind and beat Madagascar 2-1 in their opening 2027 AFCON qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday.
Madagascar shocked the hosts with an early goal in the 16th minute, catching Eric Chelle’s side off guard and forcing Nigeria to respond. [Scorer’s name pending your confirmation.]
Nigeria grew into the contest and found an equaliser deep into first-half stoppage time, with Ilenikhena, leading the line in the absence of the injured Victor Osimhen, converting from close range off Alex Iwobi’s delivery to make it 1-1 at the break.
Chelle turned to his bench just after the hour mark, bringing on Moses Simon for his 100th cap and handing a debut to Moses Usor. The change paid off instantly, with Usor netting the winning goal in the 65th minute to complete Nigeria’s turnaround.
Madagascar pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, with Hakim Abdallah forcing a save from inside the box, but the Super Eagles held firm to protect their lead.
Nigeria also came close to extending their advantage, with Tolu Arokodare striking the post after being set up by Iwobi, who was named the standout performer of the contest.
The result gives Nigeria a winning start to their Group L campaign, with Madagascar having previously stunned the Super Eagles 2-0 at the 2019 AFCON finals in Egypt.
Chelle’s side will turn their attention to their second Group L fixture against Guinea-Bissau on September 29.
