AFCON 2025: Eguavoen warns Super Eagles not to joke with Rwanda

After beating Benin Republic, Super Eagles boss Austin Eguavoen says Nigeria will not joke with Rwanda when they face in a 2025 AFCON qualifier.

In preparation for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Amavubi of Rwanda, the Super Eagles of Nigeria, under the direction of Head Coach Austin Eguavoen, have landed in Kigali.

After starting their AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign with a 3-0 victory over the Cheetahs of Benin Republic, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will now play Rwanda in Matchday 2.

At the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, goals from Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen sealed victory in Matchday 1.

After Bruno Labbadia could not be signed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Eguavoen took over as head coach of the team.

During the news conference, Eguavoen declared that his Super Eagles will not hold Rwanda in low regard.

He said, “Our country full of, of expectations. It doesn’t matter who we play, they expect us to win.

“We play people with respect, but we’ll get results.

Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has charged his Benin Republic side to be cautious of Osimhen when they take on Nigeria in a 2025 AFCON qualifier.

“They respect us, we do respect them also, we play people who lose the utmost respect.

“You don’t look down on people these days because football has, has really improved.

“So when you, when you joke with it, you can get shocked, but we’ll be on our feet.

“Remember any country that is playing against Nigeria, they always try to do what raise their game. So we’ll have to be ready as well.”

At the Tripoli International Stadium, Libya and Rwanda drew 1-1 in their opening AFCON 2025 qualifier.

There have been five international football matches between Nigeria and Rwanda.

Rwanda is still looking for their first win, while Nigeria has two wins and the other three are draws.

The match between Rwanda and Nigeria is scheduled to take place at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, with kickoff scheduled for 2:00 PM.
