Nigeria international Alhassan Yusuf produced the best scoring performance of his professional career on Wednesday night, scoring a hat-trick as New England Revolution defeated D.C. United 3-0 at Audi Field in Major League Soccer.
The 26-year-old midfielder struck in the 23rd, 45th and 66th minutes to end New England’s three-game winless run and secure their second away victory of the 2026 MLS campaign.
Yusuf opened the scoring with a powerful header in the 23rd minute after Jack Harrison’s cross was nodded on by Peyton Miller. The Nigerian doubled the advantage shortly before half-time, finishing from close range following another delivery from Harrison.
He completed his hat-trick in the 66th minute, rising highest to head home yet another Harrison cross and seal a commanding victory for the Revolution.
The treble was Yusuf’s first at professional level and made him only the eighth player in New England Revolution history to score a regular-season MLS hat-trick. He is also the first Revolution player to achieve the feat since Kei Kamara against D.C. United on September 2, 2017.
Yusuf was named Man of the Match and has now scored five goals this season, surpassing his previous career-best tally.
“It all comes down to the way we played today. It was a really good team performance. We got it right today. I was in the right place and got the goals,” Yusuf said after the match.
Goalkeeper Matt Turner made three saves to keep a clean sheet as New England completed a season sweep over D.C. United.
Yusuf joined the Revolution in 2024 after spells with IFK Göteborg and Royal Antwerp, where he won the Belgian league and cup double. He has also established himself as a regular Nigeria international, featuring for the Super Eagles at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
His outstanding display in Washington further underlines his growing importance to New England and strengthens his case as a reliable midfield option for Nigeria.
