Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has tipped Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey to become a leader in the club’s dressing room, praising both his tactical fit and his attitude in training. Arbeloa made the comments to Fulham media following the club’s 1-0 pre-season victory over Stuttgart at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon, a match in which Bassey delivered a composed defensive display to help the Cottagers keep a clean sheet in their final warm-up fixture before the new campaign.
Speaking about the Super Eagles star’s suitability for his system, Arbeloa explained that Bassey possesses the attributes needed for his high-line approach. “Calvin is a proper and top player for my style of game because we need to defend so high and leave a lot of space behind. He has everything,” the former Real Madrid defender said.
Arbeloa, who succeeded Marco Silva as Fulham head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season, went further by highlighting Bassey’s character both on and off the pitch. He described the defender as someone who balances humour with a strong work ethic, a combination he believes makes him well suited to take on greater responsibility within the squad. “He is a funny guy but when we have to work he is always the first one. I love Calvin and he can be our leader,” Arbeloa said.
Bassey has been a consistent figure for Fulham since joining the club in the summer of 2023 following a difficult spell in the Eredivisie with Ajax. The 26-year-old has gone on to record four goals and one assist in 101 appearances across all competitions, establishing himself as a key part of the team’s defensive setup during that period.
The defender’s rise at Craven Cottage included being named Fulham’s Player of the Season for the 2024/25 campaign, a recognition that underlined his growing influence in the squad under Silva. That form has carried into the new coaching regime, with Arbeloa’s public backing suggesting Bassey is set to play an even more prominent role as Fulham begin life under their new head coach.
Bassey’s development in west London followed a challenging period at Ajax, where he faced criticism from club legends and sections of the Dutch media over his ability to play out from the back after a £20million move from Rangers. His resurgence in the Premier League has since positioned him as one of Nigeria’s most reliable defenders at both club and international level.
With the Premier League season approaching, Arbeloa’s endorsement adds to the sense that Bassey will be central to Fulham’s plans, both in terms of his on-field contribution to a high-pressing defensive structure and his role in shaping the culture of the squad.
