Goals from Jurrien Timber and William Saliba helped Arsenal clinch a 2-0 win over Manchester United on Wednesday night and handed Ruben Amorim his first loss as United manager.
Mikel Arteta’s men had the ball in the back of the net inside four minutes after André Onana’s poor clearance led to Gabriel Martinelli firing home, but the goal was quickly ruled out for offside.
United grew into the contest and frustrated the hosts , but it was not enough to trouble Raya. The Gunners came close Martinelli shot inches over when the Brazilian pounced on a loose ball in the box as the first half ended goalless.
Arsenal started the second half brightly and their persistent threat from set pieces eventually paid off Declan Rice’s corner kick was flicked in by the head of Jurrien Timber at the front post to break the deadlock.
The hosts doubled their lead in the 73rd minute when Bukayo Saka’s corner delivery to the far post was headed back into the danger area by Partey which went over the after bouncing off the back of William Saliba.
This wa enough to seal the three points for Arteta’s men as Amorim suffered his first defeat as United coach. Arsenal now sit third on the table, seven points behind Liverpool in first place while United are 11th with 19 points.
