David Raya produced a brilliant save to push Enzo Le Fée’s penalty against the post, keeping the visitors’ clean sheet intact at a crucial moment.
Arsenal made the hosts pay almost immediately. Bruno Guimarães broke the deadlock two minutes after the missed penalty, curling home a fine top-corner finish for his first goal since his summer move from Newcastle, Sunderland’s fierce regional rivals.
The match turned decisively in stoppage time when Reinildo Mandava was sent off for Sunderland, and Bukayo Saka stepped up to convert the resulting penalty, sealing a 2-0 win and rubber-stamping Arsenal’s perfect record.
The victory takes Arsenal’s tally to eight goals scored and just one conceded across their opening four league matches, underlining the defensive solidity behind their title defence this season.
Sunderland, who arrived unbeaten at home this season, slip to their second defeat in four matches, having also lost on the opening weekend at Ipswich Town before responding with a win over Fulham and a draw at Brentford.
The result also continues Arsenal’s dominant recent head-to-head record against Sunderland, avenging last season’s dramatic 2-2 draw at the same venue, when Brian Brobbey struck a 94th-minute equaliser for the Black Cats.
