Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League title for the first time in two decades continue to fade.
Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki scored in each half of the crunch tie as Manchester City sealed a vital win in their chase to usurp Arsenal at the top of the table.
The Gunners came into the game on the back of last week’s home loss to Bournemouth and the hope of avoiding defeat at the home of the host to keep their title charge alive.
After hitting the post in the opening exchanges, Rayan Cherki gave Manchester City the lead from a sublime individual effort in the 16th minute.
However, the lead lasted for less than two minutes as Kai Havertz took advantage of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s howler.
Kai Havertz missed a golden opportunity to put Arsenal ahead on the hour mark as Donnarumma made a huge save.
Minutes later, Eberechi Eze fired a left-footed strike from the edge of the box which came off the bottom of the post.
Erling got on a chance in the box and buried a one-time left-footed shot into the bottom of the net to give City the lead and the win in the 65th minute.
The win extends Mikel Arteta’s winless streak at the Etihad to five matches as City reduced the gap to three points behind Arsenal with a game in hand.
Arsenal remains at the top of the table with 70 points, while Manchester City is three points behind.
A win at Burnley on Wednesday will see City go top of the league with five matches left before the end of the season.
