Aston Villa missed out on the chance to close the gap on Arsenal as the Villans suffered a home loss to Everton on Sunday evening.
A win for Unai Emery’s side would have taken the Villans four points behind league leaders, but Everton ensured they did not.
French forward Thierno Barry scored the only goal of the tie in the 59th minute as Everton secured maximum points and a clean sheet at Villa Park.
The 23-year-old forward got to the ball inside the box and brilliantly lifted the ball over Emiliano Martinez and into the net.
Everton’s win brought dismay to Unai Emery but delight to Arsenal as they maintain a seven-point gap over Manchester City and Aston Villa despite dropping points at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Arsenal currently top the Premier League with 50 points, while Manchester City and Aston Villa are joint second with 43 points.
