Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off as Brighton & Hove Albion thrashed 10-man Coventry City 5-0 at the Coventry Building Society Arena, leaving Frank Lampard’s side still pointless and without a league goal after four matches back in the Premier League.
Charalampos Kostoulas broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, showing quick thinking to collect a Pascal Groß header and rifle a volley into the far corner. Malick Yalcouyé doubled Brighton’s advantage in the 52nd minute, firing home from the edge of the box to compound Coventry’s misery.
Just a minute later, Awoniyi’s afternoon fell apart. The Nigerian forward was shown a straight red card for using his elbow on Brighton defender Maxim De Cuyper in an aerial challenge, a decision referee Tony Harrington reached after review and one that VAR subsequently confirmed. Awoniyi will now serve a three-match suspension.
Reduced to 10 men, Coventry had no answer as Brighton pressed home their advantage. Groß converted a penalty in the 70th minute, before Lewis Dunk added a spectacular strike from 25 yards in the 84th minute, and Yasin Ayari completed the rout deep into stoppage time.
Former England internationals Lee Hendrie and Sue Smith both backed the officials’ decision to dismiss Awoniyi, with Hendrie pointing to the clear use of force in the challenge as justification for the sending-off.
The result lifts Brighton into the top four of the Premier League table with seven points from four matches, while Coventry remain bottom of the standings without a win, a draw or a single goal scored since their return to the top flight after 25 years away.
Brighton next turn their attention to a Carabao Cup trip to Manchester United before hosting Arsenal on September 19, while Coventry will look to respond when they travel to Nottingham Forest the same weekend.
Coventry have now lost their opening four matches in the Premier League this season following their promotion, leaving them at the bottom of the log.
