Bloemfontein blow: Nigeria’s World Cup bid left hanging

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against South Africa in Bloemfontein, a result that leaves their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes in serious jeopardy.

The contest began brightly for Bafana Bafana, who capitalised on a defensive lapse midway through the first half. Captain William Troost-Ekong inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure in the 25th minute, silencing the travelling Nigerian supporters and lifting the home crowd.

Nigeria responded just before the interval through Calvin Bassey, who rose highest at a set piece to head home the equaliser. Replays suggested the ball had brushed his arm, but with no video assistant referee in operation, the goal stood.

The second half was played at a frantic pace, with both sides creating half-chances, yet neither could produce a decisive finish. Nigeria’s lack of a clinical edge was glaring in the absence of talismanic striker Victor Osimhen, while the forced withdrawals of Wilfred Ndidi and Ola Aina due to injuries further disrupted their rhythm.

The result sees South Africa maintain a six-point lead over Nigeria at the top of Group C with only two matches remaining. For the Super Eagles, automatic qualification is now out of their hands; they must win their final fixtures and hope South Africa slip up.

The stalemate sparked heated debate among fans. Many voiced frustration on social media, criticising tactical decisions and the team’s inability to rise to the occasion.

“Hall of shame performance,” one supporter wrote, while another questioned how a nation of over 200 million football lovers continues to struggle on the global stage. Others struck a more hopeful note, insisting the team can still find a way through: “God of soccer got our back.”

With just two games left, the Super Eagles face a daunting task. Their once bright path to the World Cup is now perilously narrow and failure to qualify would mark a second consecutive absence from football’s biggest stage.
