Bowen strike denies Everton in draw with West Ham

Everton were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against West Ham United on Monday night, as Jarrod Bowen’s second-half strike cancelled out Michael Keane’s opener at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The home side made the brighter start and were rewarded in the 18th minute when Keane powered in a header from James Garner’s corner, exposing West Ham’s ongoing vulnerability at set pieces. Sean Dyche’s men controlled much of the first half, but wastefulness in front of goal left the visitors within touching distance.

Nuno Espírito Santo, taking charge of West Ham for the first time, saw a much-improved display after the interval. The equaliser came on 65 minutes, Bowen pouncing on a loose ball and firing home via a deflection off Keane — the first goal Everton have conceded at their new stadium.

Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages. Everton thought they had a case for a penalty when substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header appeared to strike a hand in the box, but VAR dismissed the appeals.

The result leaves Everton frustrated after letting an early lead slip, while West Ham will view the point as a solid start under their new manager.
