Breaking! Former Super Eagles coach Onigbinde dies aged 88

Former Super Eagles head coach High Chief Adegboye Onigbinde has passed away at the age of 88.

The death of the former coach was confirmed in a statement issued by his family on Monday evening.

Onigbinde was eulogised as a great man who lived a fulfilled life in the statement.

“With great gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of this great man… High Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde,” the statement reads in part.”

Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde is one of the pioneers of indigenous coaching in the country and mentored homegrown coaches during his career.

He also worked as a FIFA and CAF instructor, contributing to the growth and development of football and homegrown coaches across the continent.

Onigbinde was the first Nigerian homegrown coach to lead Nigeria to the FIFA World Cup – South Korea/Japan 2002.

He also led the Super Eagles to a second-place finish at the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations where Nigeria lost 3-1 to eternal rivals Cameroon.

Meanwhile, the family of Adegboye Onigbinde revealed that the burial rites and proceedings of the deceased will be communicated to the public at a later date.

High Chief Adegboye Onigbinde is a native of Modakeke, Osun State.
