Cape Verde stun Tunisia as Cameroon power past DR Congo to reach AfroBasket quarterfinals

Defending AfroBasket champions, Tunisia crashed out of the 2025 edition after suffering a heavy 87-54 defeat to Cape Verde on Tuesday in Luanda.

The loss marked Tunisia’s third in four outings at the tournament, having earlier fallen to Nigeria and Cameroon, with their only win coming against Madagascar in their final Group B clash.

Cape Verde turned the contest decisively in their favour after halftime, producing a blistering 22-5 third quarter that blew the game wide open. By the time they stretched the lead to 60-38, Tunisia had no way back despite their efforts to stay competitive.

The island nation cruised to a commanding 33-point win to book their spot in the last eight for a second straight campaign, building on their impressive fourth-place finish in Kigali in 2021.

Later in the evening, Cameroon battled past the Democratic Republic of Congo in a tense elimination match, earning a 77-68 victory. Rising star Yves Missi led the charge with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Williams Narace added 18 points and Samir Gbetkom chipped in 16.

DR Congo’s fight was carried largely by 16-year-old Miverdi Miteo, who registered 14 points, and Jonathan Jordan with 13, but it wasn’t enough to keep them alive in the competition. The result now sets up a quarterfinal clash between Cameroon and Egypt.
