The UEFA Champions League knockout-playoff round delivered drama, goals, and surprises on Tuesday night, as Europe’s elite battled for places in the round of 16.

In Lisbon, Benfica began brightly against Real Madrid, pressing aggressively and forcing the visitors into a cautious start. The Portuguese side controlled early possession and created the clearer openings, but Madrid gradually settled into the contest.

The breakthrough arrived in the second half when Vinícius Júnior capitalised on space inside the box, finishing calmly to give the Spanish giants the lead. Benfica pushed for an equaliser late on, increasing the tempo and testing Madrid’s defence, but the visitors held firm to secure a narrow 1–0 win.

Meanwhile, the night’s most dramatic encounter unfolded in Istanbul, where Galatasaray delivered a commanding performance against Juventus. The Italian side struck first, silencing the home crowd with an early goal that suggested a controlled away display.

Galatasaray, however, responded immediately with intensity and attacking intent. The hosts quickly levelled before taking full control of the game, exploiting defensive gaps and overwhelming Juventus with pace.

By halftime, the Turkish champions had turned the contest around. Juventus attempted to regroup after the break, but Galatasaray’s relentless pressure produced further goals. A late red card for Juventus compounded their struggles, allowing Galatasaray to extend their dominance and seal an emphatic 5–2 victory.

In France, Monaco looked in complete control against Paris Saint-Germain during a blistering start. Monaco’s attacking transitions troubled PSG’s defence, and the home side established an early two-goal advantage.

PSG initially struggled to find rhythm, appearing vulnerable and disjointed. The match shifted after the interval as PSG emerged with renewed urgency. Increased attacking movement and sharper passing pulled Monaco deeper, eventually leading to PSG’s first goal. The momentum swung decisively as Monaco’s earlier confidence faded.

PSG continued to press, turning pressure into goals and completing a remarkable 3–2 comeback that leaves the tie delicately poised.

In Germany, Borussia Dortmund produced a composed and disciplined display against Atalanta. Dortmund controlled proceedings from the outset, dictating the tempo and limiting Atalanta’s attacking opportunities.

Their pressure paid off with a first-half goal that reinforced their dominance. Atalanta attempted to respond after the break, showing more attacking ambition, but Dortmund’s organisation and defensive stability proved decisive.

A second goal effectively settled the contest, giving the Bundesliga side a solid 2–0 advantage heading into the return leg.

With the first-leg matches concluded, attention now turns to the decisive second legs, where comebacks, survival, and qualification hopes will take centre stage.
