Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Como produced emphatic wins on Thursday’s late Champions League card, while Lens completed a dramatic stoppage-time comeback against 10-man Slavia Prague.
The Red Devils made a statement on their return to Europe’s top competition, beating Sabah 4-0 at Old Trafford. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring with his first Champions League goal, before Bruno Fernandes added his fourth of the season and Benjamin Šeško netted just before half-time on his first start. Lisandro Martínez completed the rout in the 68th minute.
Bayern Munich were made to work before finding their rhythm against last season’s surprise package Bodø/Glimt, going in level at half-time before a dominant second-half display secured a 5-0 win at the Allianz Arena. Jamal Musiala broke the deadlock, scoring the club’s 900th European goal, before Harry Kane doubled the lead to extend his scoring streak to eight straight Champions League appearances.
Alphonso Davies added a third with a thumping finish from 20 yards, and Michael Olise struck twice in the closing stages, either side of Odin Bjørtuft’s late red card for Bodø/Glimt, to round off the scoring.
Como marked their first-ever Champions League fixture in style, thrashing RB Leipzig 4-1 with Martin Baturina and Anastasios Douvikas among the scorers as Cesc Fàbregas’s side raced into a two-goal lead inside 38 minutes before doubling their tally after the break.
The night’s most dramatic finish came in Prague, where Slavia twice took the lead through Danijel Šturm despite playing more than half the match with 10 men following Mikuláš Konečný’s 49th-minute red card.
Abdallah Sima levelled against his former club in the 73rd minute before Slavia restored their advantage through Šturm again in the 88th, only for Lens to snatch a stunning win, with Florian Thauvin equalising in the first minute of stoppage time and Ruben Aguilar completing the turnaround moments later.
The results leave Bayern Munich, Como, Manchester United and Lens all off to winning starts, as the Champions League’s opening round of the League Phase continues to take shape across Europe.
