Chelsea Football Club are set to donate part of its FIFA Club World Cup cash reward to the family of late Liverpool striker Diogo Jota, who passed away last month.
Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who plays for Penafiel, tragically passed away in a fatal car crash in the Zamora area of Spain last month.
The accident occurred due to a tire burst while overtaking. Unfortunately, the car left the road and went into flames immediately, and both occupants died as a result.
According to reports, Chelsea & the club’s players have made the decision to donate an equal portion of the club’s $15.5m Club World Cup bonus fund (about $500k per player) to the families of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, following their tragic death this summer.
Chelsea became champions of FIFA’s newly expanded tournament in July, after a convincing 3-0 victory over reigning European champions, Paris Saint-Germain, in New Jersey in July. The West London earned £84.4 for winning the competition.
Meanwhile, Liverpool announced last month that the club is permanently retiring the No. 20 jersey at all levels of the club’s football in memory of Jota, who joined the club from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020.
The Premier League champions have also planned to unveil a special fan mosaic and observe a minute of silence in honor of Jota in the first game of the season against Bournemouth at Anfield.
