Club World Cup: Weverton hands Chelsea semi-finals ticket

Chelsea have qualified for the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup after a fortunate win over Palmeiras on Friday night.

The Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia hosted the cruch tie as both teams competed for a place in the last four.

Enzo Maresca’s side came into the tie after a comprehensive win over Benfica in the round of sixteen while Palmeiras scored in extra time to send Botafogo home.

Trevor Chalobah found Cole Palmer in space with a clever pass, the English midfielder drifts into the bix before unleashing a measured shot into the net to put Chelsea ahead.

Vanderlan came close to restoring parity for the Brazilians just before halftime as he forced a save off Sanchez from a well-placed shot.

Palmeiras equalizd a few minutes into the second half. Chelsea signee Estevao collects a pass from Richard Rios finds his way into the box before powering a shot into the roof of the net.

Both sides struggled to create meaningful attempts towards goal afterwards as the tie as the match appears to be heading for extra time.

Unfortunately, Palmeiras goalkeeper Weverton gave Chelsea the lead and the win seven minutes from time as the Pedro Neto’s free kick strick the bar, bounced off him and crossed the goal line.

The tie ended 2-1 as the Blues match to the last four of the competition where they will take on another Brazilian side, Fluminense.
