Nigeria’s Folashade Oluwafemiayo delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, breaking her own world record twice on her way to winning gold in the women’s para powerlifting event.
The reigning champion showcased her dominance by successfully lifting 175kg, surpassing the world record she had set earlier in the competition. The lift, which earned her 134.8 points, is now the heaviest ever recorded in women’s para powerlifting and secured the top spot on the podium.
Oluwafemiayo’s achievement capped an incredible outing for Team Nigeria, which completed a clean sweep of the top two positions in the event.
Fellow Nigerian Rita Ferdinand claimed the silver medal after producing a world-record lift of 158kg in her weight category. Her impressive performance ensured Nigeria finished first and second, underlining the country’s strength in para powerlifting on the global stage.
The double podium finish further cemented Nigeria’s reputation as one of the leading nations in para powerlifting, with both Oluwafemiayo and Ferdinand leaving Glasgow as Commonwealth Games medallists and world record holders.
Their achievements added another golden chapter to Nigeria’s rich history in the sport and provided Team Nigeria with a major boost in its medal campaign at the Games.
