Community Shield: Ekitike, Wirtz shine but Liverpool lose to Palace on penalties

Crystal Palace defeated Liverpool 3-2 on penalties after a thrilling FA Community Shield tie ended 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Arne Slot’s new attacking additions got off to the perfect start to open the scoring inside four minutes, as Hugo Ekitike linked up brilliantly with fellow newcomer Florian Wirtz and worked enough space on the edge of the box to pick out the bottom corner.

Palace responded well to the setback and had a penalty mere moments later, as Virgil van Dijk brought down Ismaïla Sarr. Mateta sent Alisson the wrong way from the spot to restore parity.

Liverpool were soon ahead again as Jeremie Frimpong’s cross looped in over Jordan Henderson.

The second half saw Palace respond with a flurry of good opportunities before Adam Wharton set up Sarr for a brilliant equaliser.

That meant a penalty shootout beckoned, and having come so close to a winner before, Justin Devenny emphatically took his moment to ensure Crystal Palace lifted the Community Shield
