Borussia Dortmund secured a 3-0 victory over Sporting CP in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League knockout phase play-off at the Estadio Jose Alavalde on Tuesday night.
Sporting CP posed early threats, notably when Maximiliano Araújo’s 13th-minute strike hit the crossbar, narrowly missing the opening goal. Dortmund’s offensive efforts were limited, with a few attempts from set-pieces and a promising shot by Jamie Bynoe-Gittens that went just wide. The half concluded goalless, with Sporting appearing more assertive.
After the break, Dortmund intensified their play. The deadlock was broken in the 60th minute when Julian Brandt delivered a precise cross, allowing Serhou Guirassy to head the ball over goalkeeper Rui Silva, marking the first goal.
Guirassy then assisted in the 68th minute, setting up Pascal Groß, who made an unorthodox finish to double the lead. The final goal came in the 82nd minute through a swift counterattack; Karim Adeyemi exchanged passes with Brandt before slotting the ball into the net, sealing the 3-0 triumph.
This decisive away victory provides Dortmund with a crucial advantage as they prepare to host Sporting CP in the second leg at the Signal Iduna Park.
Sporting will need a remarkable performance to overturn the deficit, while Dortmund will aim to maintain their momentum and secure progression to the next round.
