D’Tigress’ Sarah Ogoke announces retirement from Basketball

Former captain of Nigeria’s women’s senior basketball team, Sarah Ogoke, has announced her retirement from the sport.

The announcement comes while representing Nigeria at the FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament in France.

Sarah Ogoke was born in the United States to Nigerian parents, Bentley Ogoke and Edith Ogure-Ogoke, in New York.

Ogoke played college basketball for Southern Polytechnic but went undrafted in the 2014 WNBA draft.

However, Ogoke went on to have an impressive career playing for several clubs in Europe, a career that lasted more than a decade.

The 36-year-old shooting guard is a legend and one of the longest-serving members of the D’Tigress.

Sarah Ogoke played a crucial role in helping Nigeria dominate women’s basketball on the continent over the last decade, winning five consecutive titles.

Months after her first child, Sarah Ogoke represented Nigeria at the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket in Côte d’Ivoire as Nigeria won a historic fifth consecutive title.

She also represented Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup in Spain and the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan.

Sarah Ogoke is known for sublime shooting skills and leadership on and off the court.

Off the court, Sarah Ogoke is a surgeon and golds aBachelor of Science degree in Biology/Premedicine from the Southern Polytechnic State University, Georgia.
