Nigeria’s DTigress put up a spirited third and fourth quarter performance to seal a comeback win over the Philippines in the third game at the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in Lyon.
The African champions had six players in double digits in points scored as they dug deep to seal a hard-fought win over the Asians.
The DTigress entered the tie on the back of a disappointing loss to South Korea, while the Filipinos were seeking their first win.
Until the third quarter, Nigeria played second best to the Philippines as the Asians took the first and second quarter, 26-21, 25-21.
The Philippines ended the first half 52-41 leaving the DTigress to chase in the final two quarters of the intriguing tie in Lyon.
Nigeria increased the tempo of their offence in the third quarter with 11 from 16 attempts in two-point shots and five from seven from the free throw line.
DTigress went on to claim the third quarter by 14 points – 34-21 giving the lead for the first time after the end of a quarter in the match.
Rena Wakama’s ladies showed no sign of weakness in the final quarter as they reduced the Philippines to just 12 points while they poured in 25.
For the third consecutive match, Victoria Macaulay shone like a star as she recorded 16, points, six rebounds and five assists.
Nicole Enabosi was instrumental on both ends of the court as she poured in 15 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.
DTigresses two-way player Murjanatu Musa had her best performance yet in the colours of Nigeria with 10, points, 12 rebounds and eight assists and was named the MVP of the match.
Kent Pestrana and Janine Pantejos of the Philippines had 16 points apiece as they remain winless in the qualification series.
The tie ended 101-84 as the DTigress now have two wins from three matches.
Nigeria will take on the host of the qualifiers, France next in the next match.
