EIGHT CONFIRMED DEAD IN A STAMPEDE BEFORE CAMEROON VS COMOROS GAME

At least eight people have been confirmed dead and over 36 are currently hospitalized in a crush before the round of 16 match between the host nation Cameroon and Comoros at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde.

The Cameroonian FA allowed the flood gates open to allow more fans in to support their national team. The stadium capacity is 60,000 and with regards to Covid-19 guidelines only 80% (48,000) fans were allowed into the stadium, but according to officials over 50,000 fans tried to force their way into the stadium.

It was initially reported that six people died but with recent reports it has been confirmed that the numbers of dead bodies are now eight in as names of victims will soon be announced. Among those injured were children and women.

Africa’s football governing body CAF and FIFA sent their condolences while CAF is currently investigating the situation that took place yesterday.

Cameroon struggled to defeat a Comoros side 2-1 who had an out field player in goal with three of their goalkeepers unavailable (one injured, two Covid-19). The also had 12 of there players including the head coach out of the game with covid-19. They will be battling Gambia for a place in the semi-finals on Saturday January 29.
