Chidera Ejuke made an instant impact off the bench as Sevilla thrashed 10-man Athletic Club 3-1 at San Mamés on Saturday, netting his side’s second goal in a commanding LaLiga Round 2 victory.
The Nigeria international was introduced at half-time as part of a triple substitution by coach Luis García, replacing Miguel Sierra with Sevilla already leading through an early Oso strike. Athletic had been reduced to 10 men in the 11th minute when Yuri Berchiche was shown a red card, and Sevilla capitalised four minutes later to take a 1-0 lead into the break.
Ejuke required little time to make his mark. Five minutes after coming on, the winger found the back of the net in the 50th minute, finishing off a pass from fellow substitute Isaac Romero to double Sevilla’s advantage. The goal underlined the impact Ejuke has increasingly provided from the bench for García’s side this season.
Romero got on the scoresheet himself seven minutes later, converting an assist from Oso to make it 3-0 and put the outcome beyond doubt. Aitor Paredes pulled one back for the hosts in the 70th minute, assisted by Yeray Álvarez, but the goal did little to alter the course of what had already become a one-sided contest.
The result lifts Sevilla to six points from their opening two matches, building on their season-opening win over Rayo Vallecano, while Athletic begin the campaign with a home defeat under new head coach Edin Terzić.
